Garden table and chairs: composing an outdoor room that reads as one

Sizing, spacing and the quiet arithmetic behind a patio set that feels composed rather than assembled.

A garden table and chairs is really a room. It has a floor, a ceiling of some kind — pergola, thatch, vine, umbrella — and edges you can feel even when there are no walls. Get the proportions right and the space is used every weekend. Get them wrong and everyone drifts back inside.

The most common mistake is buying a matching set in one purchase. Sets sold as a unit tend to be sized for a photograph, not for a specific patio. Composing the table and the seating separately almost always gives a better result.

Sizing the table to the space

Allow roughly 600mm of table edge per person and at least 900mm of clear floor behind each chair so people can push back and stand without knocking the wall or the braai.

For a covered patio of about 3 x 4 metres, a table seating six with a lounge group at one end works comfortably. Anything tighter and one of the two functions should go.

Pairing rattan seating with a table

Handwoven rattan and cane sit well against timber, concrete, stone and painted steel tables — the weave carries the texture, so the table can stay plain.

Because the weave is open, rattan chairs keep sightlines clear around a table, which makes a small patio read larger than a set of solid-backed chairs would.

Lounge seating at the other end

Where there is room, close the outdoor room with a lounge group: the Curved Rattan Couch Set at R12,500 or the Square Rattan Couch Set at R9,000 for a straighter, more architectural line.

Hang a rattan pendant over the table if the patio has a ceiling. After dark the weave casts its own pattern across the space and the room finally feels finished.
