A Malawi chair — often written Malawian chair — is a low-slung armchair with a woven cane or rattan seat and back, built over a timber or cane frame. The form travelled south through the region and settled comfortably into South African homes, where its light weight, breathable weave and reclined seat suit warm weather living.

The weave is what defines it. Each row is worked by hand, so tension, tone and grain shift slightly from chair to chair. That variation is the honest fingerprint of hand craft, not a defect.

We work with natural, unbleached cane and rattan. Dust the weave weekly with a dry soft brush along the direction of the strands, and wipe marks with a barely damp cloth, drying immediately — the weave should never be soaked.

Keep the chair out of sustained direct sun and out of rain. It is suited to covered outdoor areas rather than fully exposed ones. Lift rather than drag it to protect the frame joints.
